Head shot of Matt Lemche

My first design project started with an old chair that I pulled from the basement of our family home at age 13. I wanted to see it transformed from traditional to modern, and I wanted to create something useful from forgotten material. This experience of learning through doing has shaped my career path. When I get into the nuts and bolts of things, I feel most excited about possibilities. I believe that uncovering how something works creates bridges in the imagination across which new concepts can enter the world.

As a designer, I believe simplicity and clarity are pillars of good design. Balance—information vs aesthetic, urgency vs space—is at the heart my visual philosophy.

From concept to print, I designed and created this engaging lookbook including photo retouching and editing. • 6-page proof of concept brochure for a travel experience.

This proof of concept brochure was a joy to put together. The logo design was fuelled by my love of Italian wine and culture, and sifting through beautiful photos of Italian cities and culinary scenes was therapeutic.
